As the title states, what is the point of a reset?
If you want to start a new just dump all your stuff in a chest and go out in the wilderness and start building again. How is this any different from a reset?
"But we want everyone to start afresh!" you exclaim, so just get your friends to also dump their stuff in a chest and start anew with you. But what about people who are not your friends or don't want a reset? Well you can do your stuff, and they can continue doing theirs, they won't just suddenly come over and start showing your in diamonds.
Whilst there's a lot of abandoned builds occupying spaces, but there's also plenty of unused land for people just to start over.
"We want a new spawn!" Sure, we can move the spawn and build a new one.
"We want new factions!" There's nothing stopping you from starting a new one.
Resets will just make people less motivated to play, since what's the point of playing when it's all going to be wiped out anyways?

Edit: After some looking at the views of a few people, I do think that a reset would be good to clean up the server a bit. However, I also think that people play minecraft for different reasons: some just wants to build, some just wants to pvp, some wants to kill monsters, some wants to just play minigames, and some just wants to dig holes etc. So whilst resets are refreshing, it would also make the people who enjoy the 'endgame' more lose interest.

Because we want a fresh start, a new spawn, new factions, a fresh everything, where everyone has to start over. Yes, we could just dump everything in a chest and go into the wilderness but why would we do that if we already have a ton of stuff. We want the WHOLE map to be reset, where there is no builds at all so everyone is starting over. That's the whole excitement about a reset.
And you are very very wrong.
Reset's actually draw people on and make them want to play. That's why many people aren't playing, they are bored. A reset will get people to start getting active again.

Yes, we can just reset, but why would we do that if we already have a ton of stuff? And if you just dump your stuff in a chest and start anew, and all your friends are starting anew, and you don't seen any buildings around since you've gone into the wilderness, how is this any different from a reset?

However, I do see where you're coming from that resets can draw people on and make them play, but does that come at a cost that active players lost interest as all their stuff is gone?

The server resets yearly(ish) to make everybody start fresh, new players who join the server leave a lot of the time because everybody else is already so far ahead in terms of gear and resources.

We also need a reset so that parrots spawn in jungles and so that more woodland mansions spawn, same reason for all the 1.11 and 1.12 blocks. If we didn't reset the world every now and then, we'd be missing out on new natural structures, new blocks, maybe even new mobs!

oh, and of course the obvious reason that there's a ton of abandoned structures around the spawn and land claimed for factions that don't even play anymore.

It's just something that needs to happen every now and then to keep the server fresh, yes, SOME players enjoy the end game as you put it, with maxed tools and everything. but they'd eventually get bored, and most players just want to start fresh along with everyone, not just them self or their friends.

In short, it keeps the server fresh and gets more players to stay on the server.

like ccshad said, its just making everything fresh
i get what you mean by just going in the wilderness but thats just kidding yourself if you drop your items in a chest and run out, thats not really restarting

But upon saying everything starts afresh, not all of it does, as some have had there builds transferred and others haven't so it still is not a level playing field. Others stop building as its all going to be wiped and who is to say what builds are worthy of transfer and which ones aren't. Even with the reset new people will join a few months in and winge about being behind the others and call for a map reset.

The purpose of build transfers isn't to give people advantages, which is why farms and items aren't transferred.
