A bit of backstory:
The Roman Empire was split between two emperors since 395 AD to make it easier to govern due to various destabilizing factors, but still considered one Empire, the western part however fell to the germanic tribes and fractured less than 100 years after the Empire was split in half.
The Eastern Roman Empire also shrunk in size, but one Emperor, Justinian the great (482 - 565) managed to reconquer large areas lost to the germanic tribes, but the Roman Empire eventually crumbeled a while after his death, with the Roman Empire being completely wiped out when the turks conquered Constantinople in 1453. |
