SocialSpy - a tip to prevent it.

Mumfie	Date sent: 2016/07/24 19:39:24 Hello everyone, I did not want to make this thread but recently it has gotten a bit annoying when I am trying to have a private conversation and I always end up having to add people to Skype in order to have these conversations. So let me start with this for people that do not know what social spy is: SocialSpy allows admins or players with the permission to read your messages, the message your receive and send. They will be able to see it in real time, so at the moment you send a message it also pops up in their chat. The good thing about socialspy is to catch ongoing harassment and advertising in private messages. The negative things is that you cannot have a private conversation going, I certainly hate it. If someone is being harassed in /msg they can take a screenshot and post a complaint about it, advertising will always be an issue, but that can also be reported. Anyway, here's the tip to annoy those with socialspy which will force them to turn it off. you basically spam yourself in msg, just like this /msg Mumfie92 I don't like socialspy! repeat that like 20 times and it will spam their chat with 20 lines making the chat unreadable. The only players that can get socialspy is admin and above, but not all admins have it, so you guys can guess who has it. The good thing about messaging yourself is that no players get harmed. Only yourself and the one sneaking in your messages get spammed. Please leave a comment if you want social spy to be accessed by certain staff members or if you don't. Also leave your experiences with it if you like to and it would also be great if you could say why you want it or why you do not want it. Regards - Mumfie

These staff members also know that i know they have it, that's why it is annoying especially for me when I get a /msg from them commenting on my conversation with players. Now when I say private I'm not talking about anything romantic or sexual or whatever, just a private message.

I certainly don't like invasion of privacy, and I hate the notion that an op can have an eye over any conversation that is happening in real time, there's a reason conversations are put into private messages, to keep them private. I understand the concept of catching rule violators in private chats with socialspy, but I hate, even as an administrator, violating the privacy of others. There's a reason it's called a whisper, or a private conversation.

I had been periodically checking if chip had socialspy enabled but whenever I did he hadn't, so it had evaded me that he had been using it. I have now disabled it for him and he no longer has permissions to enable it again, so hopefully the server will remain socialspy-free for the foreseeable future. I never use socialspy and I know Eddie doesn't either, and we were the only other people who had access to it.
