Implementing Towny.

Why should Towny be implemented?


I will first introduce myself as I am a member of Webbcraft's community. I recently joined this server with my friends digitalxd8 and ChuckTheCreeper9 looking for a small, friendly community to get involved in. So far first impressions have been positive, with friendly players and active staff, which provided help when needed. But I felt something was wrong. I felt that this feeling of community was being bottlenecked by the faction plugin. Now dont get me wrong, I actually like the faction plugin but it's nature just does not fit the server's friendly motif, and here I will state why.

1. Its just too chaotic.
Wilderness looks bad. Lets be honest it just does. Contless abandonned structures can be spotted throughout nature, protected by a random faction created just to protect their land. Such behaviour can be correctos by implementing Towny which gives wilderness only one purpouse: to mine resources. Towny also encurages players to create towns (duh) since the tools a mayor gets in Towny are far more flexible than the ones given to a faction admin. It makes players want to group together further enhancing sense of community.

2. Towny is better for new players.
By that I mean that it is more intuitive since instead of throwing players into a resourceless wasteland that is wilderness, it guides them through their first steps by giving them a safe, flat plot which New players dont have to go out of their way to find.

3. Doesn't suit the server.
So far the forums and the server have led me to believe that most players are not interested in faction war, so why not give a more powerful tool when it comes to managing communities and sacrifice some pvp. I read somewhere in the forums a post made by luigiofthebakert stating that he used factions instead of Towny because he wanted a system that allowed players to claim land while still achieving that vanilla survival feel. This feel can be reached with Towny too since players can still create towns which are the equivalent of factions. Using Towny just gives freedom to the players.

4. Towny has some impressive pvp capabilities.
Towny has the option of having enemy towns and allied towns, just like factions and lets them wage war. On top of that you can make mutiple towns get together and form one big nation that can wage war against other nations.
I might also add towny's great features regarding economy such as taxes and trading between towns which could help the currently stalled economy.

Conclusion


Im eager to see what people think about using Towny and what luigiofthebakery thinks about this. I certainly think this would be a step in the right direction for the server. Thanks you for reading through this poorly written speech, please excuse any typos ;)

I'll give a more detailed reason of why this isn't viable/why so many people are against the idea.

1. Adding Towny would mean we have to delete Factions, this is because Towny isn't very compatible with the Factions plugin ( from what I remember ) The whole server would have to change and learn the new commands that come with Towny which are quite complicated.

2. Towny as a plugin is very complicated to construct. Luigi would have to spend a lot of time customizing the plugin to how the server works. It's not as simple as it sounds.

3. With the economic side of Towny, we would have to create an economy for the server. This means a new shop with 'almost' every item, calculated to make prices logical and keep the economy balanced. Again, this would take ages with the previous points I've made.

4. The whole idea of Nations is rather pointless - It the same as a group of factions teaming together to become one big faction which in my opinion ruins the unique aspect of every faction. To 'wage war' is a terrible idea, we're a peaceful server that allows PVP. War isn't really something that suits the server.

5. In the end, referencing to your first point; Adding Towny would be more chaotic than factions ever will be.
