How to Write a Great Mod Application

Intro
I’ve felt the need to refresh a new guide for correctly writing a mod application, as Loki’s is pretty outdated now. I’ve used my own experience as co-owner at a 1000+ member multi-game server looking over the staff, handling admin-abuse, accepting applications and making/enforcing the rules that keep the server intact and a fun place to stay in. Along with that, I’ve combined the thoughts of both players, forumers, staff and former staff to come up with the most accurate guide possible to help many people in writing their application. I’ve even used this myself to try and perfect my own application and bring it to the highest standard, and hopefully it works for you too.

The Basics
Your mod application is a vital component of getting staff, the front door to new opportunities. With that said, keep in mind that even if your application is one of, if not the best that anyone has ever seen, it is only 25% of the process, with the other 75% being you. While many people love a clean, thought-out and concise application, they don’t decide their vote based on just the application; they pick you out because of who you are and how much potential they think you have to where you could succeed.

Honesty
No one likes a liar, even on your mod app. A lot of the particular portions of the app I see are lying about your age, trying to hide your previous ban(s), or making up lies about how you’ve been staff on many servers or something. For the age, Mush has had two staff members that were 11 years old, so there’s really no age limit. As long as staff think you’re a good, unbiased and just person, then they’ll be willing to give you the position. I’ve seen a ton of mature people on the server myself that I thought were 18+, but they turned out to be a really young age. A lot of them I’d consider them great staff material too, so age isn’t a key factor in how it’s decided. If you’re not that confident to post your age, then I’d probably wait a little until you get some self esteem and get a little more mature then. For the bans, it’s not really great to hide your bans. Be upfront and truthful about your past. I’d trust someone who puts their past out there, knows they were wrong and tries to move forward rather than someone who tries to hide bans and make people think they have a clean slate.

Template
Remember to follow the template. You can always add more where necessary, but at minimum you should follow the given template as follows: your in-game name, age, gender, previous bans, your reasons for wanting mod, how active you could be, country and how long you’ve been on Mush. Make sure that all the information you put is completely truthful, and give all the experience or substantial reasons you can. Also, keep it concise. Add some detail where needed, and extras if you can but never just add any useless information. On the older apps, there’s a lot of people giving that they can build as a reason for getting mod, and information like that is useless. I recommend that you give some extras outside the template. Anything that doesn’t relate to the position or the questions on the template itself shouldn’t really be included.

Aesthetics
This isn’t really something you need, but an easy to read application is great. A detailed, but concise app that is laid out in a clear manner is perfect. This is where things like the html coding stuff comes in, using bold and italic html codes to make categories more easy on the eyes, instead of a garbled mess that you need to pay attention closely to understand a sentence. There are some pretty bad looking apps that are really good, and could be fixed with a super easy bold, or indenting or something along the lines of that.

Advertising/Votes
A problem that I’ve personally had myself is constantly advertising my application whether it be in public chat, private message, over discord or faction chat or something. I got my app out everywhere, yeah, but it made me look bad and a lot of my votes in the beginning were focused on that key detail. Another thing I personally struggled with is changing after I posted my mod app. The moment I hit submit, I was a whole new person, friendly as possible and did the best I could to help people, even getting in the way of staff trying to do their job. When you post your app, remember; you’re still the same person as you were before you posted it, so just be you. Onto the votes, people are gonna not like you; it’s just how life is. People will +1 and -1, give no reasons, and they don’t have to either. If you’re going to be staff, you’re gonna have to be dealing with people 24/7, and a lot of them can be toxic and get on your nerves. You really gotta be in a certain mindspace when staffing, as letting your emotions get to you can cause really bad outcomes, like unjust punishments or longer than needed punishments. This is something I’ve seen not only on Mush, but on the server’s I’ve staffed on too. People will try to get in your head and knock you down, and you can’t let them. You’ve got to stay as unbiased as you can, and focus on the task at hand.

Outro
I’ve put a lot of time into this, and added the most helpful information I could. Hopefully this helps you write a great app, and maybe even get you mod. But remember, the app isn’t the whole thing. It’s all about you, no matter what you write people aren’t gonna judge it off the text, they’ll look at you, decide what they think of you and give their opinion. I'll try to add onto this in the future, and keep it up to date if any changes occur with the application process

If there was an option to pin threads this post should most definitely be pinned in the moderator application section.

You obviously put a lot of time into writing this out so nice work Tye.

Seeing as two mod spots are open, I think it'd be best to bump this.
