Here are some principles for making a nickname

You should stay within 3 - 10 characters. 10 characters is probably enough for you unless your username is over 10

Warning If you have less than 3 or more than 16 characters you could loose /nick entirely. On some occasions I've seen players with as little as 2 characters, but they have to be unique and still are slightly breaking the rules. I'd suggest you don't mess around.

You should use 1-6 basic colors. Try to keep them solid. If you have any more colors or place the same colors throughout the nickname, prepare to spend a lot of time changing your nickname. (It's also a bit spammy)

Use 1-2 characters of &k (if you must.) people using too much &k have gotten /nick taken away

Don't use &n &m &o It makes chat hard to read  (Not banned, but not recommended)

&l all your characters or don't. If you bold some characters and don't others it makes chat hard to read.

Use colors that contrast nicely. (Not as important, but keep it in mind)

Use capital letters sparingly, don't spread them out through the nickname. (Not as important either, but keep it in mind)

Gradients look nice too,

&4&c&f
&2&a&f
&6&e&f
&0&8&7&f
&1&9&3&b&f

These aren't rules (except the 3-16 character limit) but will make your nickname look nice.

The unwritten rules of nicknaming has been changed. Now your nickname can be as short as 1 character. As for &k, players usually have 6 &k characters in their name. Another rule to keep in mind is no impersonating staff. This rule applies to multiple different things, but /nick is a major one. Never attempt to make your nickname look exactly like a staff member's, and don't nickname yourself &6ICo_&4Owner&6I, because new players may fall for it and staff may get upset about it.
