Our privacy is being invaded by the use of Social Spy, for those who don't know what social spy is, it's a plugin that allows a staff member to view all private messages that one player sends to another.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't like this plugin as I see it as an invasion of our privacy, if we want to have personal conversations in game I believe we have the right to do so without it being listened to by staff members.

The only two staff members who can use and do use this plugin are Tyran68 & Armzngunz, Luigi obviously has it but doesn't use it as he thinks it's just "Rude".

No rules can be broken with /msg except rule 3 and spamming, but can simply be reported on the forums with sufficient evidence, (screenshots, videos, and so on). If someone plans a grief, for example, in /msg then it will be quite apparent as the victim will see the grief and report it to a staff member. Sure, the use of social spy can prevent some things, but nothing that cannot be dealt with using a simple command.

I believe the plugin should be removed or disabled.

Opinions please

The plugin is used on almost all servers with staff. It should not be removed as it can help staff to discover rule breaking.

If you got nothing to hide, then whats the problem? Socialspy is here for a reason, and if you have something very private, personal stuff to talk about, you can use skype, facebook or any other form of communication outside of the server.

Last time I checked, it was part of the essentials plugin, so have fun getting rid of it on its own. Also its good for catching spammers who use /msg and for finding out plots that may not otherwise be known, like hearing people planning to grief.
Also life is full of a lack of privacy, cameras every, NSA and GCHQ monitoring our shit.
So
DEAL WITH IT

Advertising via message is perfectly legal, according to Luigiofthebakery.

EDIT (by admin): This is false.

On the front of griefing, catching someone planning fire grief is much easier in a msg than actually finding the source block of a fire and then tracing that to a player.

Stojan, you talk about buttsex (or things close to it) in public chat too, so I don't but it that you are ashamed or whatever reason you have. And giving random people IP's through message is advertising.

I agree with wowman and stojan, I don't want social spy totally removed, but at least tyran needs to stop abusing it by keeping it on 24/7. If tyran does not put it off, yes, I do want it removed.
Social spy is just rude...

I don't think social spy should be removed. I personally think all FULL mods should have access to it, but only have it enabled when they think there is a suspicious player online or if there is a group of defaults online.

On other servers where I have been staff and also had access to social spy, I used that method of enabling and disabling it when I thought necasery. Even if staff chose not to use that method of using social spy, im sure they won't be sat there reading every single thing said in pm, and don't actually read it unless a word such as "grief" or "hack" got their attention.

I agree with what Chip said, as staff we won't sit there and read every single private message that is sent but we will read it if something catches our attention, such as swearing or bad words.

If you weren't such a toxic player in the community then staff wouldn't need to track what messages you say. Alot of your arguments are hidden in private messages wowman.

Also, this is a GAME, not real life. If you want to have a private conversation use other forms of communication such as facebook. ( Even though the government spy on you aswell )

I say keep socialspy! Although, only for Admins and higher.
I do find it a little... weird... how people share important and personal things over a game. Theres always the possibility that you'll forget the /r, send the message to the wrong person, etc.

From Luigi:

Private messages with /msg and /r are private and can only been seen by the recipient. Contrary to what BlueRoon thought about allowing staff to see private messages, I believe in maintaining and respecting this privacy between users.

(And yes, I am fully aware of the irony of posting a private message from Luigi to myself here.)

So is this no longer true? Because there is definitely stuff that I don't want read by staff or anybody else, and it's nothing to do with rule breaking. I don't want six months of work on Adventure Challenge ruined because somebody decides to share something I messaged to somebody else.

And while we're on the subject, ALL of this is just ridiculous.

Penq:
"Alot of your arguments are hidden in private messages wowman."

Armz:
"And giving random people IP's through message is advertising."

Pepper:
"Its good for catching msg spam and advertising."

Me:

What the heck has ANY of that got to do with you?!

If someone makes a complaint about something posted in a private message, it's easy enough to provide proof. (Contrary to some of what I've read here, taking a screenshot and posting it online is not some arcane art.) If there's no complaint, why do you even need to know?

Just about the only thing I can see that justifies this is the idea that defaults might come onto the server while planning to grief it. Just out of curiosity, has there ever been a team of griefers who've joined this server and have been stupid enough to actually discuss their plans using the server message system? Because this sounds like the most hypothetical of hypothetical situations.

First off, Social Spy isn't a seperate plugin. It's integrated into the plugin Essentials which is what the server is using. If you want the plugin removed you kinda are removing Essentials which is something that is vital to the server. Only two staff members have social spy. They aren't stupid enough to abuse it and would never share any personal info. It is important we have social spy at the moment though, as there is a bit of a situation going on regarding some players. Staff need to be very alert unfortunately, I know it's shitty and you think it's invasive but it's nessacary. ~Clock xx

"I don't want six months of work on Adventure Challenge ruined because somebody decides to share something I messaged to somebody else."

The staff does not tell everyone what you say in pm. Why did you even think that was the case? We might read stuff you don't want to reveal to anyone, but we won't, and have never told it to anyone. We have no reason to do so, and doing so would be an abuse of socialspy.

Did you know that it isn't always people make complaints? It is also hard to estimate the scale of what has happened in the case that the one who posted the complaint doesn't have any screenshots. And on the advertising bit: Very few would complain about advertising. They would join the server that was advertised, and might even like it and start playing on it.

And yes humble, people have discussed breaking rules through private messages.

A few points here, none of my arguments are in message, actually. NONE, so I would thank you to get your facts straight, Penquinator. Secondly, arguing isn't actually against the rules unless it gets personal. Thirdly, swearing and cussing is allowed, so why would that catch your attention? Because you made a rule up that says no swearing or because of rule 3 potentially being broken?

Some server rules don't apply in /msg, such as excessive swearing if the other party is comfortable with it, Caps too, if the other party is OK with it, and so on.

Armz - if people don't make complaints, then again, why do you care? There is stuff that staff should sort out, and stuff that they should keep out of, and I think it's pretty clear where the line is between those two things. It's not your job to resolve arguments or private disputes. And if somebody gets so bad that they're causing disruption regularly, just perm-ban them. Simple.

As for the "discussed breaking rules" thing... I don't know how widespread that is. The only possible "legit" use, if such a thing exists, that I could see for this plugin is monitoring defaults for possible joint griefs, etc. That I understand.

The "advertising" thing, though, is kind of offensive to the regulars, surely? Do you have so little confidence in us that you think we'd up and leave? There are many, many ways to advertise, and you can't police them all.

What I'm having a problem with here is that you seem to want this plugin because you have zero confidence in the server population, or even the server staff. To wit:

- You don't seem to think that rulebreakers will be punished / banned without this plugin. (Why not?)
- You don't think that people will make complaints about stuff that happens in /msg (again, why not?)
- You don't seem to have confidence in people to be loyal to the server or to want to keep playing here if anybody "advertises" to them.

All I can say is that if your opinion of us is this low, why do you even want to be admin here?

Maybe they get bullied? Maybe they think it doesn't matter? What if someone just ends up leaving because of it? Its not like we go about banning people if they have a private dispute, whether it be relationships or friendships.

Advertising is illegal, no matter what. Its not about other players leaving, its about players advertising another server.

This last bit doesn't make any sense, socialspy is here to make our jobs easier, not because we "don't trust our players". If you were in our shoes, you'd see how useful it is. It has been in use for ages and has never caused a single problem, but rather helped solve multiple problems.

Lately there has been a nameless invisible ( not with potions ) spy online I think he was waking me because a lot of blocks were breaking and I was making a hopefully very handy yet fun warp it was going to be privet until it was opened then he made a faction and claimed it then I left and never came back to it that's after he distorted all I made then he disbanded his faction
